How to run a tax year (simple path)

  1. Sign in with your household email.
  2. On the Dashboard, open an existing engagement or click New engagement.
  3. Pick the person (taxpayer profile) and the tax year (for example 2025).
  4. Complete Intake — short questions about filing status, business, inventory, vehicles. Empty answers become open items.
  5. If you drive for business: open Mileage, add trips, look up the IRS standard mileage rate for that year, then generate a workpaper.
  6. If you sell goods: open COGS, enter beginning/ending inventory and purchases, then generate a workpaper.
  7. Check Open items and Workpapers. Export markdown to hand to commercial software or a preparer.
  8. For Iowa vs federal differences, use the Federal vs Iowa page — never assume Iowa matches federal.

Tips for family members

  • You only see profiles you own or were granted access to.
  • Do not invent missing numbers — leave blanks and use open items.
  • Never backdate mileage logs or create fake receipts.
  • Label reconstructed records as reconstructed in the Mileage form.
  • When unsure, stop and ask the household admin or a paid preparer.
